Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) Programme
At Brynteg, we recognise that emotional wellbeing is a vital foundation for academic success. Our ELSA programme provides targeted intervention for those pupils who require additional support to overcome emotional barriers to learning.
What is the ELSA Programme?
ELSA is a nationally recognised support framework for pupils who need help developing their emotional literacy. It is a focused intervention designed to provide a safe, reflective space for pupils to build resilience and improve their social and emotional skills.
Who Delivers ELSA?
Support is delivered by accredited Emotional Literacy Support Assistants. Our ELSAs are school-based staff who have:
- Undergone specialist training with an Educational Psychologist.
- Received ongoing professional supervision to ensure effective delivery.
- Developed a wealth of experience in helping young people navigate specific social and emotional challenges.
What Does ELSA Involve?
ELSA is an intervention tailored to the specific needs of the individual. Sessions take place in quiet, calm spaces away from the busy classroom to help pupils feel safe and heard.
Support is delivered through regular weekly sessions which may include:
- Targeted One-to-One Work: Focusing on specific emotional goals.
- Small Group Sessions: Used specifically to develop social and communication skills.
- Creative Engagement: Using tools such as role-play, drawing, and problem-solving activities to explore personal responses to adversity.
Focused Areas of Support
The programme is designed to address specific challenges, such as:
- Emotional Regulation: Managing anxiety, worries, and anger.
- Social Skills: Friendship issues and conflict resolution.
- Personal Growth: Building self-esteem and a growth mindset.
- Life Challenges: Coping with loss, bereavement, or significant change.
Duration and Progress
ELSA is a short-term, goal-oriented intervention.
- Timeline: Most interventions last for 6 weeks (one half-term).
- SMART Targets: Each programme has specific, measurable targets to track progress and ensure the intervention is successful.
- Independence: The goal is to provide pupils with the tools to cope independently, ensuring they do not become reliant on support long-term.
