The Year 8 Parent Carer Evening will take place on 9th May 2024.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), our pupils continue to study the compulsory courses of English Language and Literature, Maths and Numeracy, Double Science, Skills Challenge, Welsh, Core Religion and Core PE. However, they also have the opportunity to specialise more in subjects they enjoy when choosing their 'Options' subjects (maximum of three). We have a fantastic range of subjects on offer from the more traditional options such as History, Geography, Sociology and French to the more vocational, coursework-based subjects such as Engineering, Public Services, Textile Design, Business and Sport; there really is something for everyone.

Pupils can choose to study GCSE or BTEC/Applied qualifications:

GCSE

In GCSE qualifications, grades A* to G are awarded in each subject (A* is the highest).

● Some subjects have one tier of entry which covers all grades

● In Maths, for example, there are three tiers of entry. The grades available are A* - C at Higher Tier, B-E at Intermediate Tier and D-G at Foundation Tier.

Assessment in GCSE qualifications may include Controlled Assessments (completed in class under teacher supervision), practicals, orals, aurals and projects. These types of assessment should be regarded as an excellent opportunity to gain marks in advance of the final examinations. Most GCSE subjects (but not all) are also tested by formal written examinations, which pupils will sit in May, and/or June of Year 11. However, in some subjects, such as English, Science and Welsh, exams will also be sat in Year 10.

BTEC/Applied Qualifications

BTEC/Applied courses are more coursework-based qualifications and are offered at Levels 1 and 2. Successful completion of these courses will lead to a qualification equivalent to one or two GCSEs. These courses contain a substantial amount of project-based learning combined with some external assessment.

For our pupils in Year 9, the 'Options Process' is just about to begin. This is such an exciting time for our pupils and we are there to offer support every step of the way.
